History

The tennis club is believed to have been formed at some time in the late 1920s and, after a number of location changes as the town grew, was lucky enough to be able to buy a small piece of land at the end of Grove Road from the Smith and Grace Screw Boss and Pulley Co in 1958 for £55.00.  Two courts and a small wooden clubhouse were built and the club enjoyed modest success from their permanent site for many years.

However during the 70s and 80s the club membership dwindled and the courts fell into disrepair until eventually it ceased to operate. After a long period of inactivity the club was revived in 1991 but had no funds to refurbish the original site. Discussions with the Town Council lead to an agreement for them to provide a new court at Meadow lane in return for a percentage of the proceeds from the sale of the land.

At that time, the sale of the land seemed a distant prospect and it was not until 2003 after exhaustive negotiations that completion was achieved.

The Club was now able to set about redeveloping the Meadow Lane site with the construction of a new club house incorporating male and female changing rooms with showers, kitchen and a large club room leading to raised veranda for relaxing and watching play.

Playing facilities now include four hard courts, all of which are floodlit to ensure play can continue through the winter. There is also a new half court for developing Mini Tennis for 6 to 10 year olds and a practice wall to provide single player warm up drills.

The club has attracted a number of new and enthusiastic committee members to help drive through its plans to develop the membership and strengthen the coaching programme. We successfully registered as a Community Amateur Sports Club and appointed R2R Tennis Ltd to provide an exciting range of coaching courses starting with an after school club in May for children from Thrapston Primary school.

The Club is affilliated to the LTA and has received support from the Northants branch to help with technical consultancy and funding for events.

On Friday 3rd July 2009 the Club was awarded the prestigious Tennis Clubmark by the LTA. The Tennis Clubmark is only awarded to clubs that meet certain criteria and quality standards. We join one of only six clubs in Northamptonshire which have achieved this status and a big thank you goes out to Robert Welman and Peter Harding for all their hard work in achieving this award.
