Men’s Singles Tournament Report – Sunday 6th June 2017

Thrapston Tennis Club 2017 Men’s Singles tournament took place on Sunday 4th June with 10 players partaking in the event.

Two groups of 5 were drawn out of a hat with a round robin format employed; the winner of each group earning the right to play in the final and the chance to become the 2017 men’s singles champion.

25 minutes per match ensured each player enjoyed 4 rubbers and the same amount of time on court during the group stages…..and some excellent tennis ensued!  The winner of each group was determined by the number of games won on an aggregate basis.

Group One saw 2 contenders pull away in the latter stages although all 5 players produced some excellent tennis.  The draw for the group stages meant that Mihai Diac needed 10 games to oust Norm Edwards in the last round…..a valiant effort saw Mihai gain 8 games which was no mean feat, but alas not enough to gain top spot and a place in the final.  Norm Edwards was a deserved winner of Group One, victorious in all 4 matches played, with a total of 26 games won.

Group Two was a topsy-turvy affair with some top quality tennis on display and a number of close matches throughout.  Testament to how close the group was, all 4 players on court for the final round could have finished as group winner.  A cagey affair was inevitable but the consistency of Grant Maly saw him win Group 2 by the finest of margins, beating Mark Alewood into 2nd place with a total of 22 games to Mark’s 21.

So, to the final and a showdown between group winners Norm Edwards and Grant Maly.  Unfortunately, the weather took a turn for the worst and whilst overcast but dry all afternoon, the heavens opened for the final!  Neither player was perturbed which meant the final went ahead as planned with a full set format to determine the ultimate victor.

A close match was played out with neither player able to gain much of an advantage in the early stages.  With the rain beating down, the play was maintained at the highest level with both finalists matching each other stroke for stroke.  After the first 12 games had been played out, there was nothing in it, meaning a tie break to decide the competition.  With the rain unrelenting and scant regard for the rules of tennis (change ends after 6 points in a tie break!), Grant Maly came out on top, winning the tie break 7-4.

Congratulations to Grant on becoming the 2017 Thrapston Tennis Club Men’s Singles Champion and to Norm Edwards who was Runner Up.  Thanks also to all the other participants, who played their part in the competition and made the day a success.  Thanks also to Caroline Arkell for providing refreshments – as always, much appreciated!

Men’s and Ladies Doubles Tournament Report – Sunday 9th July 2017

The club held the men’s and ladies doubles tournaments on Sunday 9th July in hot and mainly sunny conditions. Twelve men participated in the morning event in which 6 doubles teams played each other over 5 rubbers, each of 25 minutes duration.  Players were graded in order of ability (organiser’s best judgement!) and put together in the order 1 with 12, 2 with 11, 3 with 10 etc.   Points were awarded for the numbers of games won with the winning team achieving the highest number of games and games difference being used in case of a draw.  In the event, the clear winners were Julius Richards and Richard Male with 26 games won followed by Peter Kirk and Greg Walsh with 22 and Jim Arkell and Grant Maly with 20.  The format proved popular, providing over 2 hrs of play and numerous hard-fought rallies!  Well done to Julius and Richard seen here receiving their trophy from Emma Poole, social member and scorer for the day!

In the afternoon, 8 ladies were teamed into 4 doubles teams on a similar basis to that of the men, each team playing a full set against each of the other 3 teams.  Once again a point was awarded for each game won.  Caroline Arkell and Judith Wildman were the clear winners with 3 sets won (18 points).  The runners up were Hilary Baseley and Belynda Faulkner with 10 points.

Veteran’s Trophy and BBQ – Sunday 17th September 2017

The Veteran’s Trophy was donated by the family of Ferrers le Mesurier in 2016 to honour his memory.  Ferrers played tennis until he died aged 85 in 2015.  The event this ran along similar lines to last year’s.  Couples (of any sex) needed to have a combined age of 85 to participate.  In all, 12 couples took part and competed in 2 leagues of 6 teams with the winners of each league taking part in a ‘decider’ set.  League matches lasted 25 minutes with 2 points being awarded for a win, 1 for a draw and games difference being recorded in the event of a tie.  The winning couple were Chris Taylor and Vanessa Woodhead with Mark Perryman and Richard Male the runners up.  Our thanks to Martin Welsh (Ferrers’ son-in-law) for organising the event and David Weston (chairman) for the excellent BBQ.
