Details from 1 May 2016 – 30 April 2017
Club Tournament – Sunday 31st July 2016
Although conceived as a Mens’ Doubles event in the morning followed by the Ladies’ tournament in the afternoon, the organisers choose to merge both into a single, Mixed Doubles competition in the morning to enable the 14 players who registered for the events to enjoy some worthwhile tennis. Simon Hossack, our Mens’ B Team captain, organised a very successful league consisting of 7 doubles teams playing 20 minute ‘rubbers’ against each of the other pairs with points awarded according to the number of games won plus a bonus point for being ahead in the set. The winning couple were Mark Stockley and Rachel Danby seen below being congratulated by Simon.
Eagle-eyed observers of the uneven number of men to ladies should note that the honorary ‘ladies’ – Chris(tina), Paul(a) and Simon(e) – although putting in an excellent performance, were no match for a genuine male/female partnership!
Veterans’ trophy – Sunday 9th October 2016
The inaugural Veterans’ Trophy Tournament took place on Sunday 9th October under clear skies and fine weather on the newly refurbished and painted courts. The trophy has been presented by the family of Ferrers Le Mesurier who played regularly until his death in 2015 at the age of 85. The rules are simple: the combined age of the doubles team participants must exceed 85! The team can be single sex or mixed. In fact 10 teams took part in the event, organised into 2 groups of 5 teams playing one set (but with a time limit of 30 minutes) against each of the other teams in the group. Points were awarded to the team winning the set or who were ahead at the bell. Games difference was used to decided position between teams achieving identical scores at the end of the group sessions. The final between the winners of each group was between Lisele Sloan and Adam Hughes and Mark Alewood and Susan Pentelow; Susan stood in for Mark’s partner, Simon Hossack who was injured in the previous match at the very hands of Susan herself! In a closely fought match, Lisele and Adam came out victorious – see photos below. The club would like to thank Oona, the daughter of Ferrers, and her husband Martin Welsh most sincerely for presenting such a fine trophy in memory of Ferrers Le Mesurier and Martin for running the tournament.
