Chairman’s Report – 1st May 12 to 30 Apr 13
At the AGM held on 20th April 2013, Robert Welman (the outgoing chairman) presented his final report on the state of the club, its finances and future plans. He said that 2012 has been another busy and successful year with a full programme of events, excellent coaching and with some very good results for our teams in the East Northants League.
Membership, which was slightly down on the previous year, was key to the success of the club, with subscriptions the principle source of income necessary to keep the club afloat. The open day in June had been well attended, with good weather helping to make it a success with a number of new members joining as a result; however, continued effort was needed to attract new members. On Income and expenditure, subscription income was £1700 down on the previous year; however, this had been offset by fundraising and lower running costs, which had resulted in a small net profit being achieved over the financial year.
Club nights continued to be very popular and fish & chip social events organised by Caroline Arkell had again been a great success adding to the club’s net income. In addition the Quiz night, which was a new event this year, had been a great success raising almost £800. The Christmas dinner was held at the Bengal Brasserie in Thrapston and was judged by all who attended to be excellent event.
Members fully participated in tournaments arranged throughout the year. Additional events which were more competitive in nature were also introduced this year and were well supported. As per last year seven teams had been entered for the East Northants Doubles Leagues but this time with three men’s, two ladies and two mixed teams. As usual the club faced very strong competition from Kettering and Corby and although it had failed to win any trophies this year all teams performed well and finished close to the top teams.
The coaching agreement with R2R Tennis, which had been renewed, meant the continued provision of a strong coaching program. Coaching was important to the club, which benefited from a first rate service from Peter Harding, the head coach. Following withdrawal of sports funding to schools and the subsequent loss of contact with schools, R2R had had difficulty in recruiting adequate numbers of young participants. However, as this was such an important aspect of the club’s future well-being, the committee had agreed to provide financial support for a special coaching program for local schools for the year.
At its three year anniversary in 2012, the Clubmark accreditation had been renewed with a number of minor changes being required. Clubmark continued to be important to the club, which needed to continue working hard to maintain its status.
During the year the Club had applied to Sport England for funds towards new floodlighting on courts 3 & 4 and, although looking promising at the time, after several attempts had not been forthcoming. The committee had therefore decided that it’s aim should be to install the necessary improvements during 2013 using the club’s own funds. Plans were now well advanced with detailed negotiations proceeding with a number of professional lighting companies.
The Web Site has been further developed by Jim Arkell and now looked very professional, was easy to use and provided full information.
In conclusion, Rob thanked all those who had worked to make last year a success. He urged more club members to help with the running of the club, either on or off the committee, which now needed to focus on where the club was going and to drive membership up.
